Last Day to Check-Out Library Books June 10 EOG Testing (3rd - 5th) June 11-19 Case 21 Testing (2nd graders) June 19-21 All Library Books Due June 21 Student of the Day Celebration June 21 In-House Fieldtrip June 25 Report Cards June 28 Last Day of School June 28 May 27th - May 31st: This week, we will cover the following in each subject: Math Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes Estimate lengths using units of inches, feet, centimeters, and meters Measure to determine how much longer one object is than another, expressing the length difference in terms of a standard length unit Represent whole numbers as lengths from 0 on a number line diagram with equally spaced points corresponding to the numbers 0, 1, 2, etc. and represent whole-number sums and differences within 100 on a number line diagram   Language Arts Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words Compare and contrast the most important point presented by two texts on the same topic Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening Write informative/explanatory texts in which the topic is introduced, facts and definitions to develop points are used, and has a concluding statement or section Research Understand animal life cycles Summarize the life cycle of animals including: birth, developing into an adult, reproducing, aging and death

Quarter 4, Week 3

We Need:

• Clorox Wipes
• Kleenex
• Objects for our estimation jar (food, candy, erasers...anything) Every week I place items in the estimation jar. Students estimate and the closest wins a treasure from our treasure box. 

Thank you for recycling items and having your child bring them in! We can't wait for our flowers to bloom! : )

April 29th - May 3rd:

This week, we will cover the following in each subject:

Math

• Partition a rectangle into rows and columns of same-size squares and count to find the total number of them
• Partition cirlces and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc. and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape 

 

Language Arts

• Read on level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive reading
• Produce, expand, and rearrange complete simple and compound sentences
• Describe how words and phrases (ex: regular beats, alliteration, rhymes, repeated lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song
• Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section
• Participate in shared research and writing projects (ex: read a number of books on a single topic to produce a report)
• Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question

 

Research

• Give examples of ways in which people depend on the physical environment and natural resources to meet basic needs
• Explain how people positively and negatively affect the environment

 

Venn-tastic

This week we are discussing elements of fairy tales and comparing literature. We read "Lon Po Po" and "Little Red" both are versions of Little Red Riding Hood. In groups, students used a Venn diagram to compare similarities and differences.

News and Notes

Earth Day:
We are planting flowers on Friday in honor of Earth Day. In order to reduce, reuse and recycle please bring in a used bottle, cup or soup can to plant the flower. 

Class Celebration:
You may have noticed that your child is asking you more frequently to sign their planner every night. We are working towards our class celebration. We will be playing outside with water balloons and enjoying popsicles. In order to join the fun, your child must be responsible! Every week, he/she will need to have their planner signed and homework completed. We have 10 weeks of homework this quarter. They need 9 weeks of completed planners and homework to join! 


Reflection Sheets:
Another new item is reflection sheets. If your child receives a 2 in any subject throughout the day, they will need to fill out a reflection sheet. Once they have filled it out, please sign the reflection sheet. If I have not signed it that means I have not seen it. This means they have not reflected. This is to understand why your child is receiving a level 2 effort in their planner and what they need to do to make a better choice.

This week, we will cover the following in each subject:

Math

• Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method
• Explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations
• Understand that in adding and subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds 

Language Arts

• Know and apply grade level phonics and word analysis in decoding words. Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes
• Determine and clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple meaning words and phrases based on grade 2 reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies. Determine the meaning of the new word formed when a prefix is added to a known word (ex: happy & unhappy; tell & retell)
• Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section
• Participate in shared research and writing projects (ex: read a number of books on a single topic to produce a report)
• Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question

 

Research
