Characters and Weather!

This week we really focused deeply on major events and how our character's reacted. We also explored what air is, and how what we could do with it. Our essential question was: How does air interact with objects? They received a plastic baggie with a feather, stryofoam ball, straws and a balloon. They went crazy for the balloons! They did an excellent, 2nd grade job on documenting their observations! In their science notebooks, they will always record:
 Q stands for question
 P stands for prediction
O stands for observation
B.E. stands for before experiment question. I asked, "What do you think air is?"

Below is a mixture of pictures from this week!

New Organized Library!

Take a look at our organized library!

We also have a new sock monkey too!

Donations needed: We are in need of chapter books! If your child has read it or you happen to see one on sale at the store that you would love to donate. We would love to have it in our library!

Brain Gym!

We love Brain Gym! One of my graduate classes I did an advocacy project about the importance of brain breaks and fitness in the classroom. One of my findings, I researched, noted that children who have a brain break have an increase of on-task behaviors! I am all about that! We take a quick break in the afternoon between science and writing to exercise. Keep in mind, if you child does not feel well, ect. they have the option to sit at their desk. Usually though, they will remind me that we need to do it!  Have your child show you a pose today!

Qtr 2 Week 1! Welcome Back!

What Are We Learning This Week?

Writing: We are studying an author and learning from their techniques.

Math: This week we will start our new unit on adding and subtracting larger numbers (two and three digit).  We will begin with a review of how to interpret and write our own story problems.  We will also explore what to do if there is not enough, or too much, information in the problem.

Reading: This week we will be focusing on recognizing major events in the text and how characters react to those events.

Science: This week we will be starting our new Science Unit, “Air and Weather”.  We will be discussing what a meteorologist is and how we can prove that air is really all around us even though we can’t see it.

Fall Festival!

Dear Lake Myra Families,

We are hosting the First Annual Fall Festival on Friday, November 2, 2012 from 6pm-8pm. This Festival is a night to raise money for grants that will be used for our teachers. The 2nd Grade Sound Fair will also be going on from 5:00-6:30pm.  Furthermore, the book fair will be open for parents and students! There will also be food, games, a bouncy house, and crafts.   More information will be coming soon in a Fall Festival flyer.  We hope that all parents can come out for a wonderful night of fun and learning.

The purpose of this letter is to let you know of an exciting new tradition that will start with the Fall Festival.  We will host a silent auction of classroom baskets.  Each class will have a basket for bidding that is based on a popular children’s novel.  We are asking each child to bring one or two items for their class basket, which is hopefully aligned to the book.  Any items are welcome for the basket– gift cards, books, toys, non-perishable food items, etc.   We hope to have very nice baskets that everyone will want to bid upon.

Please have your child bring the item in by Wednesday, October 31st.  Listed below are the books each grade has been assigned.  The book each class is reading will be in the basket along with the items you supply. We thank you in advance.  All baskets will start at $10.00. Bidding will be one hour and you can pay and leave with your basket at the end of the night.

Any questions please email Christa Stearn, PTA President at chstearn30@gmail.com
