Quarter 2 Week 6

Thank you for your kind words and patience while I spent time with my family in Michigan. My class was in great hands thanks to Mr. Pattison. I am back to updating this site every Sunday night (it often shows up in your email on Monday though, but is still available). I will be resuming conferences this week. I will call to reschedule and call to make conferences too. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Quarter 2

This quarter, we will cover the following in each subject...and much, much more!

Math

  • Explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations
  • Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of 2nd grade, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers
  • Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions (ex: by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem)
  • Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members (ex: by pairing them by 2s; write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends)
  • Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m.

Language Arts

  • Know and apply grade level phonics and word analysis in decoding words. Identify words with inconsistent but common spelling-sound correspondences
  • Compare and contrast the most important point presented by two texts on the same topic
  • Ask and answer, such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text
  • Produce complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation in order to provide requested detail or clarification
  • Identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain or describe
  • Decode regularly spelled two-syllable words with long vowels
  • Identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text
  • Know and use various text features (ex: captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently
  • Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple meaning words and phrases based on grade 2 reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of dictionaries, both print and digital, to determine or clarify the meaning of words and phrases
  • Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. Form and use frequently occurring irregular plural nouns (ex: feet, children, teeth, mice, fish, etc.)
  • Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. Generalize learned spelling patterns when writing words
  • Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.
  • With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including collaboration with peers

Research

  • Understand the pattern of weather and factors that affect weather
  • Summarize how energy from the sun serves as a source of light that warms the land, air, and water
  • Summarize the weather conditions using qualitative and quantitative measures to describe: temperature, wind direction, wind speed, and precipitation
  • Compare weather patterns that occur over time and relate observable patterns to time of day and time of year
  • Recognize the tools scientists use for observing, recording, and predicting weather changes from day to day and during the seasons
  • Understand the structures and properties of matter before and after they undergo a change
  • Recognize that air is a substance that surrounds us, takes up space and has mass
  • Compare solids, liquids, and gases based on their basic properties

  • Understand how various sources provide information about the past
  • Understand how various cultures influence communities
