Character Day!

The second grade team posed as characters in the Bad Case of Stripes (not pictured Mrs. Ybarra and Ms. Tucker). We did not win the contest, but had a great time promoting literacy!

I forgot to get pictures of the kids! : ( You can see most of their outfits in the Reader's Theatre post.

Spring Fever!

Here are pictures of our class enjoying the sunshine during writer's workshop. Until...a creepy spider showed up and ruined our concentration! It was lovely while it lasted!

Check out helloliteracy.blogspot.com this weekend. Mrs. Jones created some amazing graphic organizers that are aligned with Common Core instruction. We tried it out for reading yesterday and the kids has great details! Mrs. Jones chose four samples and is placing them on her blog. Yay!

A special thanks to Mrs. Grey (Warren's mom) for coming out and teaching our class about wants and needs. We loved it!

Quarter 3, Week 7!

Spirit Week:

This week (Mar. 4th - Mar. 8th) is Lake Myra's annual Spirit Week! If you chose, your child's dress should match the theme for the day. Please see below for each day's focus:

Monday - Favorite Book Character Day

In-House Fieldtrip:

Our class is scheduled to have our next in-house fieldtrip with "Science Fun for Everyone" this Tuesday, March 5th. In this session, we will learn more about the properties of solids and liquids. Please make sure your child is at school on time, as we are the first to go.

Mar. 4th- Mar. 8th:

This week, we will cover the following in each subject:

Math

• Mentally add 10 or 100 to a given number 100-900, and mentally subtract 10 or 100 from a given number 100-900
• Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method
• Understand that in adding and subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds 

Language Arts

• Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary
• Describe how reasons support specific points the author makes in a text
• Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text
• Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section

Valentine's Day:

A class list is on the back of this week's newsletter. Look for it tomorrow in your child's homework folder/binder. 

If your child is passing out snack, please make sure it is store bought, labeled and peanut-free. 

Spring Pictures:

We are scheduled to take our Spring pictures on Wednesday, Feb. 19th. Not only will your child take an individual picture, but we will take our class picture also. 

Math

• Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces.
• Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes

Language Arts
