Week 6!

Each week, our class conducts text-to-talk. This is where I read aloud one book per week and discuss and make meaning to five vocabulary terms inside that text. Have you noticed any fancy vocabulary from your child yet?

We also discussed literacy goals for the month of September. I am constantly over emphasizing that they are the BOSS of their reading lives. Take a look to see what your child is working on.
I had a twin on Friday! Michigan love!

What are we learning this week?
Math: Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.

Reading: We are learning how to be in-charge of our own reading. We will learn how to be the "boss" of our own reading through making decisions based on habits, volume and stamina.

Writing: We are adding dialogue to our writing. We are having partners read our stories and ask questions.

Science: We will continue to explore sound and notice how it is transmitted by many materials.
We will discover how sound travels, students observe how a variety of materials transmit sound.

We will be switching classes between 2nd grade teachers in Math. This will help differentiate ability levels to meet the needs of your child.

Reminders: Field Trip money is due September 14th!

We have a class compliment party this Friday. We are voting on ideas on Monday!

Sound!

We have been discovering sound during our research time. We even made guitars! Thank you Ms. Tucker for coming in and playing for us. We discussed vocabulary such as, pitch, tension and volume. We even discovered if sound could travel through a solid!

Science "Field Trips"

Important Information about our upcoming Science “Field Trips”

Dear Families,
We are excited that we were able to schedule 4 Science related in-school field trips for our students this year!

Science Fun for Everyone (formerly known as High Touch High Tech, Science Made Fun!) will be visiting our school to conduct four 75 minute programs with each class- one program per quarter.  The programs (Sound Surprise, Weather Wise, Everything Matters and Circle of Life) tie in with our Science Units throughout the year.  This group has visited our school many times in the past and has always done a fantastic job- the kids absolutely LOVE it!!
The cost is $35.00 per child for all four programs.  You may choose to pay the full amount at once, or split your payment in two installments of $18.00 and $17.00.

The first payment will be due by Friday September 14th in preparation of our first program which will be September 18th and 19th.  Again, you can choose to pay the full $35.00 at this time or just send $18.00 for now.  If you split your payment, the balance of $17.00 will be due by Friday February 1st.

Please send your payments as soon as possible so we can have accurate numbers of children attending.  If there will be any difficulty in making these payments on time, please let us know right away.

Thank you!
2nd Grade Team
